We barely made it to his room. Truthfully, we started in the elevator, and it was a mercy that we had it to ourselves. Upstairs, as soon as the door slammed behind us, he picked me straight up with one arm around my waist, my legs already twining up to wrap him, and he kissed me. His arms, his smell, his cotton shirtâeven the room felt like a turn-on. Hotels always did. The little soaps and anonymity.
He bulled me backward toward the bed so fast the room blurred, or my eyes wouldnât focus. I didnât care. This was goodbye, and we were going to make it count. The weird wrap shirt that had been so hard to get on was helpless against him. He pulled a string, a bow unraveled, and then it was drooping off my shoulders. He tossed me back onto the bed, then knelt, tugging at my jeans until I was wearing just the cami. My hands fisted in his dark hair, his head between my legs, and I fell into it and let it happen, made it happen, all the things we liked, pulling him up to me, into me, and it was not enough, it couldnât be. I was desperate for him, missing him even as we did it all again.
After, we lay side by side in the crumpled ice-white bedding, staring blankly and peacefully at the ceiling like exhausted idiots. The clock would not stop moving, though. After a little, he reached for his phone. I was so drugged with it that I fell asleep listening to him tell the car rental people he was going to be late, and to hold his car. Hard, fast asleep. I felt so safe here by him in a tall, tall building with hundreds of rooms, all the same, and no way for anyone but Cam to know which one held me.
I woke up to the shrill yell of a telephone. Heâd set a wake-up call, and I saw that I had half an hour to get home before Honorâs carpool service dropped her off. Cam was gone, bag and all, but I had a note from him. Heâd paid for another night, so I could sleep. Heâd also left me a steel lockbox on the pillow.
